Commonly Used Items
Below are items I often recommend to people for their mobility needs. Many items are available in drugstores, and all can be bought online. As an example, Amazon is an easy place to find these items.
Car Cane: this device is used to help get in and out of a car. It provides another place to put your hand and push yourself up or lower yourself into the seat. It hooks into the door latch when the door is open and is easily removed.
Shoulder Pulley: this is an easy way to work on shoulder range of motion and stretching the shoulder out.
Shower Seat: pretty self explanatory, and they come in many sizes with or without handles.
Leg Wedge: this is great for elevating the legs, either in bed or on the couch. It helps relieve back pain and reduces swelling in the legs temporarily.
Walking Sticks: also known as trekking poles or hiking poles, these are a great way to add a little more stability while walking or to help save the knees. They also help with maintaining good posture. Some people prefer the look and feel of these as compared to a cane. They are often found at Costco, however you might want to invest a little more money and buy a pair with shocks (Leki is my preferred brand). I have hiked with trekking poles for 15 years, and having ones with shocks is much more comfortable on the hands and wrists.
Forearm Crutches: an alternative to regular (axillary) crutches, these keep your armpits happy by giving you a wider base of support through the forearms. Some versions only have a ring to put the arms through and a handle to hold onto, and I have found these to be cumbersome. Look specifically for ones with an "open cuff".
Grabber: this is used to grab light items off of the floor or shelves when it's hard to reach down or above. It won't hold a mug, but it can pick up some trash or a sweater if needed.
